Are You a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
You are likely a candidate for whitening if you have stains on the outer surfaces of your teeth. This type of discoloration, known as extrinsic staining, typically appears because of foods and drinks. Coffee, tea, and red wine are some of the most notorious beverages that cause dental stains. On the other hand, whitening will not be appropriate if you primarily want to erase intrinsic discoloration, which can occur because of genetics or certain medications. In these cases, Dr. Long can recommend a different treatment, like porcelain veneers or dental bonding, to give you the results that you desire.
You can count on us to give you the illuminated smile you envsion.
If you suffer from dental sensitivity, you may worry that you cannot tolerate whitening treatment. Fortunately, Dr. Long can vary the strength of your gel to control sensitivity. He can also provide a fluoride varnish to reduce discomfort. Sensodyne® toothpaste can also help reduce sensitivity. You may want to begin using this toothpaste a few weeks before whitening and continue use after your treatment.
In-office Opalescence® can yield stunning and dramatic results in a single visit. After a thorough dental cleaning, Dr. Long or your hygienist will coat your teeth in carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide whitening gel. This material will set off an oxidation reaction, delivering oxygen molecules into your dental enamel that break apart the bonds between stained molecules. Usually, your practitioner will apply three coats of gel in a single treatment. Afterwards, your smile could be several shades brighter.
Take-home Opalescence® can provide comparable results, although they take more time. This treatment can be a very economical option, and it will allow you to whiten your teeth on your own time. Dr. Long will provide a set of custom-made whitening trays, along with whitening gel in one of several strengths. If you choose gel with a higher concentration of peroxide, you will wear the whitening trays for about 30 minutes a day, typically for two weeks. On the other hand, if you select a lower concentration, you can whiten your teeth while you sleep. Like in-office whitening, take-home care can provide striking final results that complement your entire appearance.
